Why Do I Spin the Coins?

The graduation exhibition of China Academy of Art is drawing to a close. During the exhibition, I would like to thank my friends for their attention and affirmation of my works. I am very glad to meet many outstanding young people through the graduation exhibition.

In the explanation of the work "Rotating Coins", I wrote a relatively simple one, that is, "some coins of all countries in the world rely on magnetic equipment to keep rotating on the table for a long time". The reason why I only wrote the objective description of the work in the interpretation of the work is that I want to leave the content of the work to the audience's imagination; However, as more and more audiences and friends asked me questions, I had to explain my works to them repeatedly. Of course, I also improved my interpretation of my works in the communication with the audience and friends. Until today, I think this interpretation can be written and then written.

Creation of origin

I majored in general art in university, which was later classified as experimental Art department due to the adjustment of school departments. My tutor is Qiu Zhijie. During the three years of studying with him, he led our studio students to go to the countryside in different places successively, including Taiwan in the junior year and India in the senior year. During the period of going to the countryside, we mainly studied fieldwork and social and cultural research. As we travel to these places, we begin to rediscover them, we begin to remove stereotypes and observe the "trees and grass" in front of us. Because of this special way of observation, I see the world in a different way, and I begin to be curious about the real world. I gradually find that simple things are not simple, and complex things are not complicated. That is why I began to read the history of countries around the world in my third year of college. I wanted to know why the world is the way it is today.

Before my graduation project, I had just finished reading Stavrianos's "Universal History", and I wanted to do a work based on the history of the world. In early April this year, when I was sorting out my pictures, I found that I had designed a plan to rotate coins independently for a long time during the summer vacation of my junior year. This plan naturally expanded the idea of rotating coins independently into coins of all countries in the world based on my recent reading experience.

In my opinion, every coin is a piece of history.

What is the work trying to say?

I want to express my curiosity about the real world.

The emotion of "curiosity" cannot be expressed by my personal subjective description, but I am sure that curiosity is the same for men, women and children, and there should be a general point in everyone's heart. So I came up with the idea that since I couldn't express curiosity, I wanted to try to make others curious.

So I made hundreds of magnetic devices placed under the table, and rely on this device to keep the coins from all over the world on the table for a long time.

A coin that keeps spinning for a long time is easy to attract because it reverses people's everyday life experience. Most people, when they see my work, they're curious, they want to know why the coins are spinning; Some audience can not help but touch the coin that is rotating, some audience want to turn the fallen coin again, some audience will put their hands on the table after reading the work description to try to feel the "magnetic force", curious audience will crouch down to uncover the tablecloth to explore the secret; Children will blow on the coins, elderly people will crouch over the coins, and more friends will take out their mobile phones to shoot small videos to share in moments. All of these behaviors show the curiosity of the viewers, and I think their curiosity about coins is the same as my curiosity about the world.
